The videos of the trend are undeniably great, too: uncanny clips of rows and rows of boys on cinema escalators, fizzing with banter, trying to keep straight faces as they roll into screenings looking like their mums have dressed them. The crux of the joke is fairly simple: Minions is fundamentally stupid, so in dressing up in a fancy outfit and applauding like they’re at the opera, the teens are simply seeing this stupidity and raising it, because that is funny (no teen, after all, is immune to a bit of “random” humour: millennials, for example, should look upon themselves and the way they would inevitably have sent “Salad Fingers” to everyone on MSN). And now that the #Gentleminions are being persecuted and banned from cinemas, Universal have tweeted: “To everyone showing up to in suits: we see you and we love you.” They hired one of music’s most in-demand producers, Jack Antonoff, to make a soundtrack for the film featuring artists including Phoebe Bridgers, Caroline Polachek and BROCKHAMPTON, all of whom are internet savvy enough to be very much in on the joke. It’s also not surprising, considering the age range of these perps, that a new Minions film has caused a meme spillage from the internet to real life. When you consider that the behaviour being described essentially hinges on groups of teenage boys showing up to Minions screenings dressed in suits, lining up on the escalators and applauding throughout the film, it is objectively quite funny. The Mallard Cinema in Guernsey had to issue “massive” refunds due to “stunningly bad behaviour”, its manager describing the scenes as “absolutely heartbreaking”. The Regal Cinema in Cornwall has barred “unaccompanied children wearing suits” from its Minions screenings, while the Odeon chain said that “due to a small number of incidents in our cinemas over the weekend we have had to restrict access in some circumstances”. And now that loyal fans have mobilised to see the much-awaited second film in suits and ties, as befits such an occasion after a seven-year wait (and thanks to the #Gentleminions TikTok trend), they have been banned by various UK cinemas, because of supposed anti-social behaviour. The little yellow guys, breakout heroes of Despicable Me and its two sequels, and the titular stars of the 2015 film Minions and its sequel, Minions: The Rise of Gru, out in cinemas as I type, do not have much luck.įirst they became a memed-to-death symbol of the sheer breadth of western production (you can buy Minion-themed anything, including a poster of the “Mona Lisa” as a Minion, Minion Crocs, and Minion condoms).
